John and I are doing ok, the hospices nurses come and go and he listens to men's conferences on his laptop. Amazing how God uses technology for His people when they need it. John had to cancel attending the Men's Conference but can "attend" in his home. Thank you for praying for us and our family. Love you all.

A new look at Faith Folk Cafe'

Hi everyone, Pam here...I started goofing around trying to lighten the look up and then I went so far that I could not get back to where I started...does that make any sense??? Have you been there, done that? So, instead of lighter I've got grey and black, which I guess will make all the work look good, or, maybe I'm not done yet. Myste is up to her eyeballs in a new site so I don't want to bother her and not sure what Jane is up too. So, I'll just keep messing around, praising God for this site and hoping it looks great in the end.
p.s. I have over 800 little squares that my greeting card company needs me to hand paint and then fill in with pen. Pray for my hands...thanks!
p.s.s. I've changed the music's order to random. Tell me if you like it or hate it. I'll listen :D

A little note about great faith from Streams in the Desert. Mystele has an interview for us soon, but I thought to squeeze this note of encouragement in.

He Knows Us

"I know him, that he will command his children" (Gen. 18:19).
God wants people that He can depend upon. He could say of Abraham, "I know him, that he will command his children... that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken." God can be depended upon; He wants us to be just as decided, as reliable, as stable. This is just what faith means.
God is looking for men on whom He can put the weight of all His love and power and faithful promises. God's engines are strong enough to draw any weight we attach to them. Unfortunately the cable which we fasten to the engine is often too weak to hold the weight of our prayer; therefore God is drilling us, disciplining us to stability and certainty in the life of faith. Tell us in a nutshell about you and your family:
I am wife to my best friend, Dave. Mom to 3 kids- 2 boys ages 8 and 6 and a little girl- age 3. We love the Lord and we are trying to use our art & music to bring glory to God! I homeschool the kids; so we spend our days reading, learning, creating, playing, and exploring together.

What is your favorite medium and tools to use?
I use acrylic paint on stretched canvas. Painting is my favorite thing to do- it is totally enjoyable and relaxing to me. I also play around with fabrics and sewing, and paper crafts such as card making and decoupage.

What is your favorite time to create?

This is a hard question because I am so busy taking care of the house and kids that whenever I get a spare minute I jump at the chance to create!!! morning, noon, night- whenever the urge and time arises.(Trust in the Lord with all your HEART. Art by Sara Mincy)

Where do enjoy creating the most? (ie. kitchen table, outdoors).

I used to paint in the kitchen- and this was OK- but basically it was because I had no where else to paint- and it was quite the mess- between all of my art supplies, the dirty dishes- the food, the kids, the dog- you can imagine!! So we shuffled some rooms around the house- turned the playroom into Dave's office/game room- and turned Dave's office into an art room for me!! Yay- now I have a place for all of my tools and paint and canvases, etc. It has helped the creative process a lot and just knowing I can go up to my art room and paint for awhile without having to put it all away after has been priceless.(A peek into the Sara's kitchen *see blog for more)

What do you want people to know about as they view your art?
I just want them to buy art that makes them happy. I am all about that in our house- I have my art up everywhere- simply because it makes us happy and inspires us and helps us to keep our focus on God and His word. I would encourage especially young people, when they are decorating a house or apartment for the first time to just have fun- buy what makes them happy, look around gift shops and goodwill and etsy to see what inspires them- you don't have to wait until you have the money to have fun with decorating. That is the reason behind what I do- I want people to be surrounded with art that will inspire them, encourage them, and make them happy.

Do you have a life verse?
My life verse has always been II Timothy 2:15- Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth....
But as time goes on there are so many scriptures that speak to me and inspire and encourage me! I love Psalms, and so many books in the New Testament- Ephesians 2:8-9 is great, and Proverbs 3:5-6. The kids and I are memorizing James 1- so those verses are really special to us right now.

Sara & Dave: What are your dreams/hopes for your folk art and music business? The Bible says that every person has been put here for a purpose. Personally, Sara and I believe that our art and music are very big parts of our purpose. We recognize that God, in His graciousness, has lent us both our passion and our creative gifts, and so we feel that it is our privilege and responsibility to share our faith through our art. If we can impact people’s lives for eternity by a simple picture or quiet song, then we have fulfilled part of our responsibility before God to use the talents He has given—and we find real joy and peace in that!

What is your favorite time to write music?

All the time …unfortunately, that’s not possible. Really, mornings are my best creative time when it comes to actually hammering things out on the piano or written music, but the “muse” can strike any time. I’ve had songs come to me while mowing the lawn, studying for a Sunday school lesson, listening to a good message, or thinking or praying about a specific issue.

How many songs have you written, app.? I have never counted how many songs I’ve written, but if you only count the ones I wrote the music and words for (not arrangements of old hymns) then I’m guessing around fifty or so. Up until the last few years, I actually wrote very little of my own music (did more arranging of existing hymns). I thank the Lord for opening up my heart and giving me the desire and ability to write original lyrics/music. So many of my songs are a direct response to how He is working my life, the lives of those around me, or in our church. How many CD's do you have for sale? 4.

How many instruments do you play? I only play two instruments with any real skill…the piano and the trombone. I was a band director for a few years though—and my degree was in Music Education—so I’m “dangerous” at most of the instruments to some degree or another :-/ What is your favorite instrument? Definitely the piano. If I didn’t have my piano, I’d be in therapy somewhere :-/

When do you find that you are the most creative? I am absolutely the most creative when my heart has been moved by something spiritually…something “clicks” and my mind begins to go crazy on a certain theme. This will happen to me sometimes in the middle of a service at church. Pastor says something, and I start madly scribbling lyrics…with my wife elbowing me to “pay attention” all the while! But I am paying attention…that’s the reason it happened in the first place! It either happens that way, or I’ll mull on a “seed” thought for days or even weeks and then just sit down at the piano and start “messing around”. Those are great times for me, too.

How long have you been a musician? Uhmm…well, I STILL might not be a musician, but I’ve been playing piano since I was 5 J My mom was a real slave-driver, but I am SO THANKFUL! I would have never had the discipline on my own.

Do you have a life verse? Absolutely…Psalm 28.7 – The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to Him. (ESV)

I am always encouraged by prayers from friends and the book Streams in the Desert (and of course the Bible and the Lord Himself) as we walk through the trials, the unknowns and the sudden endings of many hopes and dreams since my husbands lung transplant and our youngest son's recent diagnosis of severe MS (app.27 lesions in his brain with the largest at his brain stem). But our great God has made, as promised, "the crooked ways straight."

Please take the time to check out the women at incourage and also Jennifer at JRH, she makes beautiful art and both she and her site are a blessing to others. And also, please keep my family and I in prayer...

By jove I think I've found the new look...at least for awhile. Taking a cue from Mystele I cut out the color completely and enlarged the site. Bingo's not just the farmer's dog, it's also what I said when I sat back and took a look at the new clean and razor crisp site. Great music as always will be found here and art tutorials too. Mystele has some really great ideas about teaching and we want to keep showing our favorite youtube finds (especially Myste's).

We are more than just art... you can look up a Bible verse on the sidebar, translate this site into any number of languages, listen to Nancy Leigh DeMoss at Revive Our Hearts or John MacArthur at Grace To You, and memorize daily verses from the women of CWO. You can also come alongside our persecuted brothers and sisters in prayer at Voice's of the Martyrs, keep abreast of the minute by minute global happenings at Rapture Ready and listen to some really great, Godly music. Kind of like a GREAT Christian coffee shop (you'll have to BYOC, but you can wear your jammies :)

I am so pleased to present this next interview you haven't heard of them, you'll never forget' em! This delightful family of artists has an uncanny knack to encourage and lighten hearts through their creations. I, for one, look forward to reading their blog and seeing what they're up to. Without further blabber from me, meet Jill, the family rep for our interview, from Things With Wings and Other Things.

* when & how did folk art sweep you off your feet?

My sister and I grew up surrounded by creative and artsy parents. Our dad was a professional photographer, screen printer, and graphic artist. Our mom’s artwork has taken many transformations throughout the years – starting out more country and ending up more whimsical. She attended technical school for fashion design and learned a lot about fabric and sewing that still influences her work today. As adults, us girls gradually started making more and more handmade gifts for people, incorporating the skills that we grew up watching our mother master. Now we kind of all ‘feed’ off of each other – freely sharing ideas and techniques, without competition or proprietary. Although we do like to tease each other when we see each other showing up in our own work that “it must have seeped into my sub-

conscious!”

* tell us about how you've "met with" Jesus through your art.

Making art was part of the healing process during grieving the loss of our husband/father. It has become a wonderful opportunity to reach out to people and

encourage them. We use quotes in our work that have spoken truth into our own lives, and will hopefully do the same for others. Nothing has been sweeter than talking with people who tell you their story of who they bought one of our pieces for and what it has meant to them. We’ve got lots of neat stories. As for the actual act of creating – it can be a special time as well: those moments when you’re uninterrupted, you’ve got your praise music on, and the ideas flow easily – you know you’ve received a gift from the ultimate Creator who is sharing some Inspiration with you. Our youngest artist Emily meets with Jesus through her singing and song writing. She is a blessing to this family of women and inspires us to live for Him.

* what are your favorite mediums and/or tools to use?

We’re all in love with paper – scrapbook and vintage – it’s kind of obsessive! Acrylics, and matboard are essential, and good old sharpies.

* what is your favorite time to create?

Anytime is a good time, if you’re in the right mood!

* any tips for beginning folk artists?

You just have to get in there and DO it. Don’t let the idea that it has to be “perfect” paralyze you. Sometimes the best stuff happens when you just let yourself experiment. Don’t like it? Gesso over it, paint more layers, cover it with paper, put it aside, work on something else and come ba ck to it another time … Rarely can it not be salvaged.

* describe your artistic "muse(s)".

I think we’d all agree that we don’t “get” the word “muse.” We recognize that our talents and inspirations are gifts from God. We try to be thankful and mindful of that every day. As for things that inspire us? A good quote…The bible and a good study…Each other!

* what are your dreams for your folk art business?

That no matter what we do, that it would always be fun and enjoyable – never a chore or a source of stress. Also that we might show the world that Christians aren’t boring fuddy-duddies! We can be crazy and fun.

* how do you manage family and your business?

We have amazing, helpful, supportive husbands and families. But it’s good to be always mindful about whether we are maintaining balance. And our kids are good at letting us know when we’re not so much! We’re very blessed to have families who appreciate what we do because they know how much it means to us.

How did you get started blogging, and what keeps you going?

A friend, Leslie Shelor, started a blog and after watching her for a while, I "gulped" and started my own blog. I had to check and my first entry was 5/25/05...nice little symmetry (of sorts) going there, wouldn't you say? Folks commenting keep me going but primarily God keeps me going. I feel I'm pleasing Him as I chronicle life at Thistle Cove Farm. I think it also pleases Him I'm vocal about my walk with Jesus Christ and give Him credit for His many, many blessings to Dave and I. There have been times people have e-mailed me and told me a particular entry was thought provoking or they requested prayer. If my blog can bring someone to the realization they need Jesus, the time is well spent. I fully understand I may never know, this side of the veil, if a heart has been touched and that's okay. It's all about Him but sometimes there's a little cranky Sandra thrown in .

What's your favorite time to create/write?

God has blessed me with an attitude of gratitude so anytime is a good time. If I'm discouraged I count my blessings and that, usually, works. If counting my blessings doesn't keep the gray skies at bay, then I know I'm weary, hungry or both. Vince Lombardi said, "fatigue makes cowards of us all" and that's true. My "attitude of gratitude" weakens when I'm tired or hungry and, through the years, I've learned to recognize the symptoms.

Where is your favorite place to create/write?

God has blessed Dave and I with a piece of Heaven on earth. There's absolutely no place that's "not good" on this farm for any type of creative work. Sometimes I'll take my spinning wheel to the sheep pasture and enjoy a beautiful day with my fur friends. Other times I'll head to my studio and listen to audio books while I work on quilts, tea cozies, etc. Generally, my day begins in the sunroom, listening to Alister Begg and others on XM radio; the sunroom is a great room to look over the valley and reflect on God, His word, His blessings.

Do you have a favorite Scripture?

My favorite Scripture is Psalm 116, the whole thing. It speaks to me constantly and each time I read it, I find a new, different meaning. I taught in Russia in 2004 and took several Bibles to give to folks along the way. The KJV was given to Ekaterina, a young English teacher in Yaroslavl, and I told her Psalm 116 brought me much comfort and joy. Several months later she wrote me to say it had brought her much comfort during those dark days following the Chechen terrorist group who slaughtered school children. Thru Him, we are all connected.

Do you have a favorite Christian song?

I love both Morning Has Broken and It Is Well With My Soul - both old hymns bringing much comfort and joy.

p.s. Here's a bit of my HEARTand A PRAYER: The first song on the playlist is the song I played on guitar and sang at church yesterday (Amazing Grace..My Chains are Gone). My husband preached at a church just north of us. It was a blessing. He taught on Indwelling Sin. Just when we think that we've got sin beat it is standing at the door. We take offense too easily, judge too harshly, hold people to impossible standards while playing God, we are selfish, self centered, critical...on and on. And wouldn't you know, I sat down later that day with a friend who slightly offended me, and I instantly shot back a criticism. Don't you just hate yourself when you do that, am I the only one?? Oh, Lord to be more like You. So we must hold our tongue, forgive, and not be so quick to take offense. Faith, Hope and Love by Jan Thomason

Jan is a dear friend from my blog world. She makes me laugh and I need that A LOT! She is a wild and wonderful believer from Center Point, Texas and I know you will love her as I do. And now, heeeeeeeere's Jan....

1. Where do you live?

I live in the Hill Country of Texas, just outside a little town called Center Point, on a working ranch that my husband's family has owned since 1890. It's really easy to give people directions to our ranch because along the white fence at the entrance I have secured six bicycles that I have sprayed pink. *The first day they were up, my boys were so thrilled that they were, well, speechless.

My husband, Frank, ranches full time and it's his passion. He loves what he does!

I moved to the ranch from Oklahoma City when we were married 23 years ago. It was a huge adjustment for me, but after some time went by and we started having babies, I knew I was in the right place. I wouldn't have wanted to raise my three boys anywhere else.

All your life?

No. I was born in Dodge City, Kansas, and after living in Leawood, Kansas, until the fifth grade, we moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan ("Yes, there really is a Kalamazoo!"). When I graduated from high school, I made the decision to attend my parent's alma mater, Oklahoma State University, where I graduated in 1975. After I graduated, I lived in Oklahoma city for 14 years until Frank and I were married. (How the Tank and I met is another interview:)

2. At what point did you realize that you were an Artist.
It's kind of funny in a sad way.

I've been artistic all of my life. I remember having to draw the ear canal in 5th grade and i looked at the small picture in the health book and drew it great big on a honkin' piece of poster board. Both of my parents doubted "to my face" that I had drawn it free hand.

Needless to say, I wasn't encouraged to pursue any art classes in school.

Before I started scrapbooking sometime in my late 30's, I was always "the poster girl" for whatever group needed a poster for an event, but I still didn't know that my talent was a gift.

It was when I started scrapbooking my boys younger years and people hired me to scrapbook for them that *somehow* lead to making cards and that lead to all the rest, that I realized that I had not just a talent, but
a gift from God.

So, I guess my answer is that is was a life long process.

3. What is your favorite tool and favorite medium to use?

My favorite tool is a screwdriver. :-)Oh, wait, do you mean my favorite art tool?(yes Jan...)
I'd have to say the one I'm using at the time.My favorite medium? Does paper count as a medium? It's my drug of choice so I think I'd have to say it's my favorite medium. I LOVE paper. I collect it. Poor Frank.

4. How do you balance creating artwork with your home life?
Ouch! That's always been a challenge for me! I have a sign I made that is on the wall in my studio right in front of me that says, "BALANCE". It's so hard for me to pull myself out of my studio! My best friend told me once that I'm different if I haven't been able to create - that creating makes me whole. I agree.

5. What advice do you have for young artists starting out?

I would suggest that if art is your passion that you MUST pursue it!

Life is too short NOT to work a job or deny yourself an activity that brings you joy!

Trust me. I'm old.

And, I would strongly suggest that you take some classes to find the right area in the huge world of art that you love! There's so many different mediums and sometimes it takes a while to find your passion.

Go on some retreats and take classes in different mediums. There are so many wonderful retreats to choose from! Want some suggestions? Email me and I'll help you out!

6. Where is your favorite place to create and what's your fav. time to create?
I am very blessed to have an actual studio so, of course, I'd say that's my favorite place to work. I could use an assistant, however, to clean up after me - I don't care how big your place to work is *a card table in the corner of the family room or an actual studio*, it's always a mess - I speak, of course, only for myself!

7. What inspires you?
Gosh, that's a hard question. I think I would say that creating something in the hopes that it will bring someone else joy or a piece that brings me joy is my inspiration.
I think of my art as a ministry. If something I've made makes someone smile, then God has used me to bless them. That would be my biggest inspiration.

8. How does your faith in Christ translate into your life, art and business?
I give God the glory for everything that I create.
He guides me through each step of everything I do in my life and in my art. He is totally in control and I can't imagine living my life without Him in it.

9. What are some of your goals for 2009 and plans?

My goals for this year are to live joyfully and in gratitude, to spend time with my mother and my sisters and their families, who all live up north.

And, to find the balance in my life that I need to give Frank the Tank and my boys the attention about which I daydream.

I'm also teaching for a second time at an art retreat which I'm very excited about,

and I'm attending another art retreat in September that I'm also very excited about!

Small, intimate retreats with the most amazing women!

My hope for 2009 is that my health improves *enough said, but you can pray for me if you'd like:)*,

decide what path I want to take to bring more attention to children living in poverty and to follow God's lead in that endeavor.

10. Please share a favorite tip or two that you use in your Folk Art?
Enjoy each step and let God lead your creating - when you start a project and you have this idea of what it's going to look like when it's finished...be flexible enough that God can guide you to the end result as HE sees it.

And, this is what I always tell the girls that sometimes work for me in the studio - always remember, in art, there are no mistakes!

11. How did you name your business?
You really are asking the hardest questions!

Why can't you just ask who I like best? ...Brittney or Martha?

The name of my blog and my Etsy store have been in place for the few years that I've been blogging and selling on Etsy, and that name is what people associate with me and my art - the Polka Dot Barn.

You know what? I have a different favorite scripture depending on where my life is....does that make sense? So, I'll tell y'all today's, 'k?

1 Peter 1:8 Though you have not seen him, you love him, and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy.

And, my favorite Christian song?.....same answer as above!

Today my favorite song is Shout to the Lord.

I was singing it last night and I got to the chorus and had to stop singing.

I was so filled with the Holy Spirit that I couldn't do anything but cry.

So, that's my favorite Christian song today!

Often my favorite Christian song is the one I'm singing.

That's just who I am.

Update on Toby...Towering Heights

SORROW: Our dear son Toby (see 2 posts below) has advanced MS...they found white patches in his brain but also in his neck and chest. (This all started because he thought he had a pinched nerve in his neck, he can't look down or his body gets numb. That is just one of his symptoms). But that "pinched nerve feeling" is part of it too and even has a name. I think I cried all the way home in the dark last night, feeling pretty hemmed in with my husbands lung transplant, sister's cancer, daughter's nasty divorce, and now my Toby too. He was a mason, but will not be able to do that anymore...my thoughts rolled over the verse, "Yea, though He slay me I will trust in Him." because it seems to be the people I love being slain around me.
GROWTH: I'm in it, I know the feeling so well, I am in another growing time in my Christian walk. I remember the pain in my legs, called "growing pains", when I was a little girl. It's never easy to grow, a tall oak has to battle all of the elements; lightning, drought, flood, cold, from its life on the forest floor to the towering heights. A little bird can't fall from the sky without our Father knowing...caring. I know He watches me. It gets so hard sometimes, but God is good, always good and always seeking our good..our growth, our towering heights.
SURRENDER: I know many of you are going through hard times at this moment. Christian, release your fears and sorrows to the One who can and will help you. He is "our very present help in times of trouble". And I say this as much to myself as to you.
As I sit here typing I understand that there may be one of you on the "forest floor", beginning this steep climb, the narrow path, the Journey. I am calling back, "The clefts in the rock are safe, all is right because God is in these hard places with us. He has predetermined our steps, He IS our hiding place."

Keep this one thing to the forefront of your mind, "That I may know Him."

Prayer request for my son...

Please pray for my son Toby (29). They have found many white patches on his brain and he is having quite a few physical problems due to them. They are giving him his diagnosis, after numerous tests, on the 20th at noon in Green Bay.

I'd like to warmly welcome Cindy from Yapping Cat Studio. Accomplished at lettering, painting and creating the most beautiful things with paper, buttons and bits of silky ribbon... she also stitches the sweetest birds you've ever seen. I frankly and accidentally (sorry C) picked an awful time for her to have to deal with being interviewed, as she is co-hosting Paper Cowgirl Retreat starting this Friday in Texas with the Fabulous Jan, Tina and a few other wonderful artists. But she hung in there and graciously gave the interview for us. (On a personal note...Cindy has become to me one of those blog friends who you've never met in "real life", but feel you've known forever. Her mother, Carolyn, sadly died from cancer Jan. 19 of 2008, yet only a few months later Cindy was one of the first to reach out to me when my little sister was diagnosed. She has cheered us on through these difficult months, always there in an email saying, "Oh, Honey...I know...I'm praying.")

What is your favorite medium and/or tools to create with and why?

I bounce back and forth. Today it’s paper, paste and vintage. Tomorrow it might be paint and canvas. Or maybe felt and beads. Although truth be told, I enjoy painting, but my passion right now is paper. Especially creating little books. Dabbling in many mediums just seems to be my nature. I’m a Jill of all trades…I’ve done a little book illustration. I did wholesale for about five years (with painted glass and such), and now I’ve discovered paper arts. So, I’m pretty fickle when it comes to any one medium.

What is your favorite time to make art and where is your favorite place to do so?

I used to be a night owl. But as I’ve gotten older and have fewer hormones (big grin) I’ve become an early bird. Plus I have two cats that like to wake me up at 4:30 am to feed them. Most mornings I go ahead and stay up and stumble bleary eyed into the studio to work for awhile. I’m fortunate in that I get to use the extra bedroom in the house for my Studio. It still has a twin guest bed in it, but rarely does anyone ever visit anymore! (All my nieces have gotten to grown up). So, I have a whole, junky little space that is all my own.
I used to share an office with my Sweet Hub…but he says I’m too messy and he booted me out! LOL.~Beautiful Paper work~ by Cindy

Do you have your own space or are you at the kitchen/dining room table????

My own space. I have a funky, faux treatment on the walls, old chandi and old shutters. Lots of my favorite things in the way of decor. It’s very me. I’ve actually heard my Sweet Hub apologize to someone for having to sleep in there. LOL. It’s the kitty’s fav room in the house as well.

Do you like to create in silence or with music in. If music, name some of your favorites.

It’s silly, but I can’t listen to music too much. Then I start dancing…singing (BADLY). Mostly old 80’s/90’s stuff, but I like a few new things as well. Since I can’t paste and dance at the same time, I mostly, listen to the dreaded talk radio. I tend to let it be just a background noise. And many mornings…I just listen to the quiet.

Where can we see your work?

I put a lot of things on my blog at Yapping Cat Studio and I have an Etsy, and Flickr. I recently signed up to do Glitter and Grunge. And a lot of my work is in a well-known local gift shop/restaurant.

What are your dreams and goals for your business?

Sigh. I’ve long since given up any great dreams of fame. LOL. Seriously, to just enjoy what I do. It always thrills me when someone “connects” with one of my pieces. When I can see the joy on their face. I like the idea that something I created can make someone else happy. I do hope to grow this year, of course, I think any artist does. One day I would not mind doing some design work, or to return to illustration. But for now, I’m content to just create and play.

Who was your biggest female influence in your life?
Please tell us about her.
~Carolyn~ Psalm 23 "The Lord is my Shepherd..."

My Mom (Carolyn) was my biggest cheerleader. She always encouraged me. Was always so positive about whatever I was creating at the time. We had tons of plans to do something together once she retired. At one point it was a small shop. We later changed and had played with the idea of creating greeting cards. She loved to write and I love to draw. We had planned to call it “A Mother’s Heart and a Daughter’s Hand”. She was so very creative and she loved to do flower arrangements and home décor. I miss her everyday. And I have to say other artists have always inspired me. Loved all that Mary Engelbreit’s done. Got to meet her once, could NOT believe I was actually breathing the same air she was. It was pretty awesome. And so many others, Cecily Mary Baker (flower fairies), Dena, Tracy Porter, Susan Branch and the list goes on and on.

How do you manage family and your art business?

Since it is just me and the sweet hubby, I have to tell ya, it’s pretty easy. Although, sometimes he does not understand my need to go into the studio at 4 a.m. LOL. But I manage (most days) to stay on top of the laundry…but vacuuming is whole other story. LOL. He is very encouraging as well. Says he looks forward to the day when he can just collect MY paychecks. LOL.

What advise do you have for others just starting out?

Don’t wait. Practice, practice, practice. Develop your style and know the direction you want to go in. Be it design or paper mache’. Once you’ve got it nailed down, get yourself out there. Don’t let fear strangle you and keep you from doing anything at all.

How do you see your faith in Christ connected to your art and creations?

I believe that my creativity comes from God. My ability to draw, or to create is a gift that I’m honored (and always a little awed) that other’s appreciate. I like to think that in those early, morning hours of quietness and creating that God is putting me in the direction that He sees fit. A lot of times, scripture will work itself into my art, or be the basis for a piece itself. As for my favorite scripture... the Psalms.

* when & how did folk art sweep you off your feet?

I fell in love with art when I was 10 years old. My mom used to work in a museum warehouse. Art going to “El museo de bellas Artes” in Buenos Aires (The Museum of Beaux-Arts) would stop there to be restored, cleaned up, etc.

I would spend hours there surrounded with magnificent works of art. As a child I was in awe of all that beauty, and I wanted to do something like that. I took drawing lessons, and I was the youngest student. I learned how to make portraits using charcoal, pastel and pencils.

The first folk art painting that I saw was the work of Molina Campos, an Argentinean folk artist. My mom and I were great fans of his art. I love a variety of styles but I am always captured by the simplicity and beauty of naïve painting, and, in this season of my life, it’s what I feel drawn to do.

* what are your favorite mediums and/or tools to use?

Acrylic paints, pencils, charcoal, Loew-Cornell brushes (yes, they are cheap but I love them), deep edge canvases and crackle medium

* what is your favorite time to create?

Night is my favorite time because it’s the only time I get to be by myself, and everybody else sleeps. Being a home school mom with 3 very young daughters doesn’t give me a lot of free time to paint during the day.

* what are your dreams for your folk art business?

In the future I would like to have my own folk art gallery. I am already making plans and praying about it, but I always have to give it up to God and see what His plans are for me and my family. The Lord did great things in my life, things that I couldn’t even imagine or dream. So His plans are better than mine as Ephesians 3:20 says, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us”

* how do you manage family and your business?

I don’t work that much during the day. I usually work at night when they sleep so they don’t even feel it. If I have to do something during the day I will make them participate or find something else for them to do after I spend time with them.

My husband is very supportive of my work. I think he is my biggest fan, and he helps me A LOT with the house and the girls. My house is always clean, organized, and there is always good food on the table (he likes to cook too!)

* any advice for beginning folk artists?

In the business aspect, I can recommend to check out Val’s art diary art tips. I used them and they were great to start my business online.

In the artistic aspect, you need to believe in yourself, hope for good things but be ready for rejection. Artists deal with rejection very often. When a piece doesn’t sell, a gallery sends you a rejection letter, or your favorite artist snubs you, we take it personally because our work is an expression of ourselves. So you need to find your identity in Jesus and not in your art. If something doesn’t sell, move on quickly, keep creating and pray, pray, pray.

* tell us about how you've "met with" Jesus through your art.

I have created many pieces guided by Him, inspired by His love, care, power, compassion, and salvation. Even when I paint my ladies, most of the time I try to hide something of His character in the painting, the beauty of His creation, the meaning of the colors or symbolism.

When we create a work of art we are expressing His power (He is the creator!). Look at Romans 1:20. It says that God’s “invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead”.

I know He filled me with my skill (and every artist too), and He cares about art. When God was giving instructions for building the Tabernacle he said, "See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs…” So I feel guided and supported by Him.

Featured Folk Artist ::: Jane DesRosier of Gritty Arts Studio

We are thrilled to welcome Jane DesRosier to the Cafe today! Jane has a well-established presence on Ebay and has recently launched her own website. When I think of Jane's creations, the word that comes to mind is "inspired." Jane's work has a deeply spiritual undergirding that comes through so clearly in her folk art paintings and dolls. Her work is simply mesmerizing. Without further ado...

♥ when & how did folk art sweep you off your feet?

Gosh, that’s a hard one. When I say I paint folk art I am referring to a particular style of naïve painting with bold colors often outlined in black. I draw very much the same as I did when I was 12 yrs old. My style has developed and I have gained some techniques, but I’ve been painting the same faces a long time.

My father is a fabulous watercolor painter and he does very realistic looking marine art. I think that when I was young I felt like I could never paint as good as him or as realistic as him, so I went the other direction for a long time. Now, I find myself with more confidence and a desire to give realism a try…I want to mix the two somehow.

As far as the sweeping me off my feet thing is concerned…I have been pretty into painting since I started selling on ebay. I was so thrilled that people would buy what I painted, that it drove me forward. The more folks were interested in my art, the more I wanted to paint. I feel very blessed.

♥ what are your favorite mediums and/or tools to use?

I love wood, tin, canvas, acrylic paint, papers, clay, wax, charcoal, coffee, and rust. I wouldn’t want to be without my paintbrushes, big Liquitex knives, DeWalt power tool, plyers, wire-cutters and the computer.

♥what is your favorite time to create?

The morning. I love to drink a cup of coffee and work. After my second cup I am finally awake and am pleased to see I made something! There is something about that lucid sleep-state that is good for creating. Late night is good too…but I get kind of loopy.

♥ any tips for beginning folk artists?

If you have the desire to create, pay attention to it. Just get moving. There is an incredible abundance of inspirational videos, books, classes, and magazines. These can be good resources but don’t forget to look within. Be inspired by others, but don’t try to copy them. Pray and ask for direction.

♥ what are your dreams for your folk art business?

I kind of want to move outside of ebay and have been heading in that direction for some time. Ebay has been a huge blessing in many ways and is a great opportunity for anyone to be able to sell something. Unfortunately, it seems like the second someone gets a good idea or a big sale, there are a handful of imitations up within 24 hrs and I am kind of tired of it. Other top-selling artists are feeling the pain as well but there doesn't seem to be much we can do about it. I guess it is like that anywhere in the world though. I have been fortunate to be able to sell some paintings and dolls directly from my website and that makes me very happy!

I suspect good things are going to happen, but I have no idea what they are. My hope is that I could make a living and glorify God with what I do. I know I can dream or set goals, but all too often my Father has different plans for me and I find my big ideas were nothing compared to His. I really just try to do this day by day.

I have so many ideas just waiting to manifest. I am a bit obsessed with art. Even when I am doing something else, in the back of my mind the wheels are turning and ideas are forming…I am usually thinking about making something before my eyes are open in the morning. That kind of inspiration must be God-given so He will most likely use it for something, huh? Lord help me if it goes away.

♥ how do you manage family and your business?

Not very well. I always feel like I should be doing more. I deal with the same stresses other working women do who are married with children. It is a constant struggle to keep my priorities in order and manage my time well. My house is never very clean, I can’t seem to keep the flowers on the front porch alive, and my old dog hasn’t gone for a walk in a long time.

I even wanted to spend more time on these questions but figured I had already taken too long...=)

♥ how did you come up with the name for your business?

I just thought about what would describe my style and what I like...and the word "gritty" seemed to fit. For some reason I just love things that are aged, crackled, stained, broken-down, and rusty. I have always been resourceful and able to make-do with what is around me. I just started painting on whatever I could find.

I was a lost sheep and Jesus found me. He took my wreck of a life and is making it beautiful. In some way, that is what I am trying to do when I paint on these found objects.

♥ tell us about how you've 'met with' Jesus through your art.

That is actually a tough question…

Any success I have is because of God. I am nothing without him. Jesus said, 'I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15:5)

I have known for a long time that of myself I can do no good. It is only by God’s saving grace that I am alive and have been given a second chance (many of them).

I guess the way I have “met with” Jesus through my art is just by constantly asking for direction…Asking every move to make big or small and trying to be obedient to his promptings. This communication is what builds the relationship. It also builds my faith.

so, what's new here? well, pam and i are excited to begin a new endeavor. we'll be highlighting folk artists who are also Jesus followers. i am so excited about our first featured artist, but you'll have to wait...to be unveiled soon!

What's Pam up to???

Well, I'm getting along with the painting, here are some new photos (near my front door at home) and today was the exciting moment of clarity...I know exactly where I am going now. Finally I'm moving smoothly in the direction that my heart is set on. It's so exciting. There is a similar feeling when you "discover" a truth in God's Word and it's so overwhelming that your heart pounds. We bow our knee and cry, "My Lord and my God". It is sometimes almost too much, this utter love of the Holy One. When I am writing a song or painting a picture I stop and ponder, play things out, turn all the stones over looking, looking, looking...until the aha moment. Then a smile, relief! My feet are on terrafirm once again.
As you read and study the Word of God you are moving spiritually in familiar territory, pleasant discoveries are just around each bend, sometimes painful truths that you must deal with in your life are found out, glaring truth...repent, undo, do over, be kinder, help, love...love...love. He is the King and Creator of LOVE. We are to be His image. If you are not reading the Word of God as you know you should be, dear sister in Christ I call you to move smoothly in the direction of the Saviour, set your heart on finishing the race in a way and manner pleasing to Him...

Tuesday: I was able to paint a little bit in between customers today, I got a start on some of the flowers. I sketched lightly with pencil-erasing on top of the dried coffee is a trick- can you see the rest of the flowers that are sketched? It took 2 days to complete the background. But I'm still working on it, looking for the day it is completed.

Monday:I've been working on a large canvas piece. I'm totally inspired by Mystele's homes and flowers. (Can you tell how much I love her art and her heart :) So, flipping it in my own little way I thought I'd take a photo as I go. But of course I thought of that after I put the second coat of coffee on. So picture in your mind a white canvas...that now looks like this:

The canvas is quite large and it's taking on a look of leather. There is a children's song called, He's Still Working On Me.

It took Him just a week to make the moon and stars,

What are your favorite tools to work with?
Pam: Good, expensive Brushes (I've only got a few...the rest are cheapies :) and I love to paint with watercolor and coffee.
Mystele: charcoal, doll house detail brushes, and filbert brushes.

What are you reading now?
Pam: Life Management for Busy Women by Elizabeth George
Mystele: reading? what's that? oh, yeah, i remember...well, i've been working on a book called "that's my son" for about 2 months now! it's NOT a long book. oh, well.

What are you working on now?
Pam: I'm working on a greeting card for Legacy Card Company. I also have a new Oz pic in mind..."Trespassers Will Be Melted".
Mystele: bringing a sketch to life of three hip little angels.

How long have you been drawing?
Pam: Since I could hold a pencil or crayon.
Mystele: started drawing again in 2006 to sketch out original patterns for my folk art dolls. i began drawing for painting in 2008.

What music inspires you?
Pam: I love Fernando Ortega. If his CDs cost $500, I'd save up for one.
Mystele: everything from opera to folk.

What is your favorite scripture?
Pam: Joshua 1:9 Because of my husbands illness there are days I've been very afraid.
Mystele: Deut. 30:11-20, and, no, i don't have them memorized...yet.

What church do you attend and what do you do there?
Pam: A Bible church. I'm the kid's choir director and I have a crochet class with the older girls. I also teach Sunday School to the older girls 10 and up. I LOVE them. My husband teaches at church sometimes and he also teaches the high school and college kids on Wed. nights.
Mystele: the church my husband "grew up" in and where he serves as the junior high youth pastor. i love to encourage, come along side other people making their way Home, through music.

Why does Faith Folk Cafe exist?
Pam: I could not find a place like this in blogworld so I'm in the process of creating it. It's what I wished was there. Walls don't stop me, I go through them. I am pretty fearless, although I can't deal with angry/crazy people. I just shut down. I want a Christian friendly site that is here to glorify God and a place to fellowship with his people. It is evolving as we go. I wanted Mystele because I loved what she'd write to people, so positive and she has such a good testimony. Always giving glory to the Lord. I'm so glad she joined me.
Mystele: to encourage christians and seekers with the redemptive love that we've received from God, both through spiritual and creative avenues. i'm so glad the Lord brought the two of us together!

I am collecting some of Mystele's work, it was decision I made when I saw it on ebay. I put in a bid and my husband kept watch and bid for the fun of it. We now have a small, but serious collection. Not all of the pieces are included and I'm sad that my photography skills are not what they should be...
Click here on the word blog and find her on ebay...I don't know why I'm telling you this because I want all of her work. If I could tell you how happy her piece with the 4 little girls makes me you'd be reading for an hour or more. And she can sing...my favorite on her CD, yes, she has a CD, is her song, Say The Word! She also writes scripture on old library book cards and attaches them to the back of the painting. COOL!

As I wind down the rabbit trail that leads from one fantastic blog to another, I am always amazed at the creativity I find out there (too many to name, but you know who you are:).
If you ever doubt your artistic bent or wonder to yourself, "why do I need to buy one more skein of yarn, bolt of cloth, tube of paint"... this is what God says, "She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine linen and purple. She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes." Proverbs: 21-24
Rest in it.

I offer private watercolor classes in my studio and some women say, "I can't even draw a stick person." I reply, "Then you are probably a wonderful artist, you just don't know the techniques yet". (Most artists can't draw a straight line!)Remember when we were children, we practiced for hours and hours to spell our names, our streets, spelling MOM. We had a new and powerful way to SAY STUFF. As tiny little women we liked that :) You bet we did. And we developed the technique. We can sign our names now without so much as a thought or glance. Are you shaking your head, saying, "I can't draw a stick person and even my hand writing looks like that of a serial killer or doctor :)".... remember what God says, "For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what she does not have. 2 Corinthians 8:12

In the days before I could read music (I still read music slowly with a dominant right hand) I would take blank music papers and draw little half notes, quarter notes, whole notes and rests all over the page. In my mind, once I could get my mom to come to the piano and play the song, it would be what the world had been waiting for, a song above songs, maybe something the angels sing...She would sit at the piano and play my random notes, telling me, "This isn't music." And she was right, it wasn't...I didn't know the techniques yet, the order. Our God is a God of order. (But I was still kinda pleased that the piano was playing something "of my very own"). I am a guitarist and traveled around for years, singing and playing for a living, I've written many, many songs.

My mom could play the guitar a little bit, a few years later and I could play the guitar a lot. In the early years she would sing us to sleep with cowboy songs. I always requested, Billie Joe by Johnny Cash and it always made me sad. I longed for him to live in the song, but he always got to0 big for his britches, took his "guns to town" and turned them on a grown gun slinger where my lovely Billy Joe "fell to the floor." I sang it to my children. My oldest son still likes Johnny Cash. I think that began my love for the minor key. Happy songs just didn't make me, um, well, er, ah happy! They were/are not as "thoughtful" in my ears. I still feel that way. The minor key.. I paint and sing in it. You will hear it in the sidebar playlist. The sound of the deeper things! We grow in the valleys, it has been said, not on the bright mountain tops. How true, how very true. I paint many funny women, but I also have titles like, The Angel of Loss and You Are Not Alone. I am reaching out to others with those paintings, shared pain, telling them they are not alone, they are loved, pointing them to Christ. Taking a little of the heavy weight from a sister's shoulders. The other day I was bemoaning to John, "Why are my paintings so different, even though women buy them, why am I not getting more contracts. Why am I so different?" The next day a Greeting Card company wanted to sign me, they said, "We love your work, it's so different." Have you wondered, "Why do I feel like I'm different?"....remember that God says this, "Each one should use whatever gift she has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms." 1 Peter 4:10
Rest in it.

As children of THE Creator of everything in existence we've inherited the desire/inclination to create from Him, our Father. If you ever wonder why you can't read a magazine without thinking, "Hey, I could do that!" Or if you draw a picture with your index finger in the soap suds at the kitchen sink, smell your childrens crayons and sigh, wander around flea markets with a big cart and back-pack "just in case", or __fill in blank______?
It is because you are filling your life and home with creative works, taking what someone else has sold or thrown away and making it your "very own". Writing your own songs of praise, in whatever medium you work in. We write our life songs to this wonderful, wonderful God, who loves us so deeply that He sent His Son... Remember what God says, "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the Heavenly Lights, who does NOT change like shifting shadows." James 1:17
Rest In It.
No matter what the creative issue is, get out your bible and "remember what God says about it." And then just rest in it as you continue on your way.
